Pole Lathe Turning & Tool Forging

There is a unique satisfaction to making everyday items by hand. Bowl turning has been around for centuries and since its resurgence in the last century in the west it has been growing rapidly, and for good reason, it’s fun and rewarding. Many regions of the world share similar techniques of applying sharp tools to rotating wood using the power of our own bodies. Starting from a log of fresh split greenwood, you will learn to safely use an axe to rough out a bowl blank and then you will use hook tools to shape your bowl while operating a traditionally designed foot-powered pole lathe. This is a demanding physical workout using your legs, hips, arms, shoulders, hands, and quite a bit of concentration. This is not shared to dissuade you as many people of many sizes, shapes and experience learn to turn bowls, but rather a mention for mental preparation.

*If hired to teach a workshop we charge by the day + Moms/VAT. Please contact us for contract details.

If you do not see the workshop that you are looking for below please get in touch to see if we can create a unique experience. We have arranged week long and multi day workshops that incorporate different studies and craft elements for example.

  • 1 day Beginners Bowl - Max 10-12 students

During a one day bowl turning class you will have the opportunity to experience axing and turning with the intention to complete the day with a small wooden bowl. We will have pre-axed bowl blanks prepared should you need them and will also offer additional assistance during the turning process to ensure you complete a wooden bowl. A one day class is more of a crash course or taster experience in Pole Lathe turning. If you are interested in gaining more turning experience we strongly recommend a two day class. All tools & materials will be provided by the instructors. If you have your own tools please see below.**

  • 2 day Beginners Bowl - Max 10-12 students

A two day class is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the experience of Pole Lathe Bowl Turning. During this class you will learn to safely axe out your own bowl blank, and then using the lathe turn a wooden bowl. Compared to a one day class you will have ample time to complete a good size eating bowl, with the potential to start or complete a second one. In this class we will also cover sourcing wood, sharpening turning tools, and more. If this is your first time we strongly suggest a 2 day class. All tools & materials will be provided by the instructors. If you have your own tools please see below.**

  • 1 day Intermediate Plate - Max 10-12 students

Once you have turned at least a few bowls moving on to other shapes is the perfect next step. Plates have many of the same techniques as a bowl but offer some additional challenges as you work to create a flatter surface for both the underside and top of your plate. During this class you will learn about plate orientation in wood and have the opportunity to axe and turn a plate. Depending on experience a day will be ample time to complete at least one small plate with the potential of starting a second one, or to complete a decent size dinner plate. This class requires prior experience turning bowls on a foot powered lathe; if you are unsure about your experience please contact us. All tools & materials will be provided by the instructors. If you have your own tools please see below.**

  • 1 day Intermediate Handled Bowl - Max 10-12 students

Once you have turned at least a few bowls moving on to other shapes is the perfect next step. Handled bowls have many of the same techniques as a regular bowl but require more precise tool control, design awareness, and attention. During this class you will have the opportunity to axe and turn a handled bowl. Depending on experience you will have ample time to complete one bowl with the potential to start a second one. This class requires prior experience turning bowls on a foot powered lathe; if you are unsure about your experience please contact us. All tools & materials will be provided by the instructors. If you have your own tools please see below.**

  • 2 day Intermediate Locking Lid Box - Max 10-12 students

This class is for those who have turned a handful or many bowls on a foot powered lathe and are ready to start making more complex pieces. One of the most satisfying things we have made on a pole lathe are locking lid boxes. During this class you will learn about box orientation in wood, how to axe and turn a locking lid box. These boxes differ from a friction lidded box in that you use additional tools to create a channel and lip in order to create the ‘lock’. This class requires a few unique tools to the process therefore if you have your own tip up and tip down you are welcome to bring them but you will need to use our tools to complete the process**. This class requires prior experience turning bowls on a foot powered lathe; if you are unsure about your experience please contact us.

  • 1 on 1 or couples class

Sometimes a more intimate setting is what you long for to really ask all the questions you possibly can & learn or improve your skill with less distraction. Contact us to create a turning class that fits your specific needs.

  • Improvers course (offered as partial day or multi day class)

One type of class that we see far less often is a space offered to those with some previous experience longing to simply improve their technique, explore more production methods, design elements, etc. If none of the above classes meet your desires please contact us to arrange a class where we can focus more specifically on the technique where you wish to improve, or if you want a space where together we can assess what would be most supportive for your improvement in the craft. This is available as both a one on one, or group workshop. There is also the potential that you can attend another group class but have the specific attention of one of us on the side.

  • 4-6 day Pole Lathe Building- Max 10-12 Students

One of the biggest barriers to turning on a pole lathe is building the lathe. We get it, we were intimidated for a long time as well. Over the last 3 years we have been a part of building over 20+ lathes. With this experience we would like to offer a space to support folks with interest in building their own lathe, although we would like to offer it a bit differently than our other workshops. We would prefer to support a group of people through the lathe building process but are also open to working with 1-2 people. For this class we would ask the participants to source the required wood, tools, and space to work in. For the duration of the workshop we will either build lathes alongside you, or be on site for support and questions while we also do some of our own craft work. Instead of a specific class price we ask for a donation towards our time, or to support us by purchasing some of our pieces, or some other exchange; we are open and flexible. We can also combine this with other class offerings.

  • 1-2 day Turning Hook Forging - Max 6 students

We are very excited to have begun forging our own turning tools. We are new to this, and yet we also recognize a strong ask from folks to learn how to make their own hooks. Similar to the lathe build class we want to offer a space where we can walk you through what we know, forge alongside you, and practice ourselves. We will bring the forge, the anvil, the tools, and all other machines needed to forge turning hooks. We ask for some support towards our time or an exchange of another kind. The cost of materials, gas, and some wear/and tear on the forge & tools usually amounts to 20-30€, when we have a group of us working at once it may be lower than that.

Turning Class size: 6-12 Students

All classes will include breaks. Please bring your own lunch unless otherwise stated or arranged. Tea, Coffee, and biscuits will be provided as well.

Hosting: Would you like to host a class? Do you have a indoor or outdoor space where workshops can be held? Please get in touch! We like to offer hosts either a discount or gift for providing a space for workshops to be held and for helping promote the event. Thank you for considering and we look forward to creating with you.

Financial Support: We know that the cost of workshops can be a barrier. If the cost is inhibitive to your participation please reach out to us. We do our best to have some spaces available on the basis of an alternative exchange or as a gift. Please get in touch info@wildcraftedhome.com
