Spoon Carving
Spoons, one of the simplest and most used tools. We often find that everyone has a favorite cooking spoon, and more likely than not, a wooden one. Making beautiful & useful items for your home or as gifts is one of most special skills to have. It all begins with spoon carving for most green woodworkers. Spoon carving is a wood craft that has a low barrier to entry only needing a few basic tools to start and a material that is widely available in both urban and rural settings. It is also a very mobile craft. We have taken our set of 3 or 4 tools with us on 4 week long backpacking trips for a way to keep our hands busy as we rest our legs, and on short day hikes, and many other adventures. We love always having a craft in our bag that we can pull out and work on throughout the day.
*If hired to teach a workshop we charge by the day + Moms/VAT. Please contact us for contract details.
If you do not see the workshop that you are looking for below please get in touch to see if we can create a unique experience. We have arranged week long and multi day workshops that incorporate different studies and craft elements for example.

1 day Beginners Spoon Carving &/or Axing - Max 12 students
This class can either be geared with a stronger focus on carving or on axing. In the case of carving, during this class we will discuss what to look for when selecting wood, tips for spoon design & how to carve with confidence. I will demonstrate how I ax out a spoon blank from a round of wood and then provide each student with a pre-axed spoon blank.
If you are more interested in gaining experience and confidence working with an axe then we will spend the majority of the day focused on axing safely and efficiently. During an axe focused class participants will spend the last part of the class going over knife grips for carving the rest of the spoon but may need to complete their spoon at home. No prior carving or axing experience needed.

2 day Beginners Spoon Carving & Axing - Max 12 students
It is always our favorite to teach 2+ day classes. It gives much more time to dive into the techniques and feel them in your body. Spoon carving is a simple craft with many things to learn, so two days will go by quickly. During a two day class participants will have ample time to learn about safe and efficient axe work, knife work, spoon design, wood selection, and an intro to sharpening. You will be able to complete one spoon with the possibility of more.
